Improving Your Apartment Door Security as a Renter

Whether you’re moving into a new apartment or you’ve been a renter for quite some time now, your security matters. However, many people today think that making significant changes and improvements to their apartment door security will cost them a fortune. They might think they would need to pay for expensive locks and high locksmithing rates for a proper installation.
This is not always the case. There are some simple things you can do to make your unit a harder target for thieves and intruders without spending too much. Here are some of them:
Install an Additional Deadbolt Lock
Smart apartment renters do not rely solely on their door knobs, and one of the simplest things you can do to improve your security is to add a deadbolt lock. Deadbolts are made from strong and durable metals that can resist forceful attempts from intruders. Should your main lock fail, your deadbolt can still keep thieves out.
If your apartment unit doesn’t have one, it’s best to have one installed as soon as possible. Be sure to ask permission from your landlord or property owner before proceeding.
Have a Security Bar
If, for some reason, you aren’t allowed to upgrade your main door lock, purchasing a door security bar may be a good alternative. Security bars, also known as door jammers, are small metal bars placed behind the door that can add additional reinforcement. This option is best with inward-swinging doors.
These are easy to place and adjust, and they require no installation or drilling. Simply place the yoke of the bar under your door handle and the other end of it on the floor, and your apartment now has added security.
Strengthen Your Sliding Doors if You Have Any
Your front door may not be the only access point you need to improve. Some apartments have sliding doors installed, usually by the window or balcony. Although they’re often located around the back, thieves can still find ways to climb up and try to gain access to your home.
To prevent this, you can have tracker blocks placed to prevent your doors from sliding open. You may use a pipe or sturdy piece of wood for this. Besides this, you can also have the glass reinforced with a security film. This makes your sliding door tougher to break.
